ÿÈÕ´óÈü¹ÙÍø was the only university in the nation to place two teams among the top 10 in the United States in the recent 24-hour, global IEEE Xtreme 9.0 computer programming competition. In the competition, students compete against each other to solve a set of programming problems.
LETU also was the only Texas university in the Top 10. The competition is organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world's largest professional association for the advancement of technology.

LETU's first team, called "NamesAreHard," placed 5th and its second team, called "11YellowJackets," placed 8th.

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities, North Carolina State University, Kansas State University and John Hopkins University took the top four spots, respectively.
"We are, by far, the smallest program in the Top 10," said LETU dean of engineering Dr. Ron Delap. "Overall, we beat schools from the Big 10, PAC 10, Big 12, ACC and more."
The two teams between LETU's #5 and #8 teams were from University of California Irvine and Carnegie Mellon University. Mississippi State University and University of Hawaii rounded out the Top 10.

Each member of all teams placing between 4th and 10th place in the IEEEXtreme 9.0 competition will receive a Raspberry Pi computer.

"NamesAreHard" is ranked 5th among 195 in the U.S. and 83rd among 1923 teams competing globally. Team members are computer engineering graduate student Aiden Wolter of Clovis, Calif., senior computer engineering student Andrew Pollard of Summerfield, Ill., and senior computer science engineering student Josh Workman of Longview, Texas.
"11Yellowjackets" is ranked 8th among 195 teams in the U.S. and 113 among 1923 teams competing globally. Team members are senior computer science student Hannah Brown of San Diego, Calif., senior computer science student T.C. Buscher of Scio, Oregon, and sophomore computer science engineering student Azrael Brown of Duncanville, Texas.
Faculty sponsor was Dr. Seung Kim, associate professor of engineering.

In the 24-hour computer programming competition, 1,923 teams totaling more than 4,000 students from 63 countries competed. The competition presents teams with a number of unique programming challenges designed to test their skills program design and analysis. Some of the skills tested include analyzing task requirements, identifying the appropriate solution, and testing the program to ensure that it meets all the problem requirements. Teams could have from one to three people and were required to work independently of each other.

IEEE has more than 395,000 members in more than 160 countries and more than 90,000 student members. It sponsors more than 1,100 conferences in 73 countries annually.
