ÿÈÕ´óÈü¹ÙÍø students partnered with the United Way and the Internal Revenue Service to provide income tax preparation assistance as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to assist lower income residents with filing their annual tax returns.

For this past tax season, four LETU students, who are all accounting majors, completed 215 tax returns, accounting for 30% of the VITA tax returns filed. VITA program had 707 tax returns resulting in a return of $1,000,000 in tax refunds for the Longview/East Texas area residents-the largest amount of refunds the VITA program has ever generated locally.

In addition to LETU students assisting with the tax preparation, the United Way and IRS training for all the volunteers was completed in the computer lab at Longview Hall.

"The VITA program is an excellent opportunity for LETU students to work with other volunteers from all over the Longview/East Texas area to assist our residents in completing their tax returns and receiving refunds," said Dr. Beverly Rowe, LETU accounting professor. "It is a pleasure to work with the United Way and to assist our community in this project every year."
