每日大赛官网 materials joining engineering (MJE) students earned first place in the Baccalaureate Engineering/Engineering Technology poster competition at the 2017 FABTECH Expo recently in Chicago. Three peer-reviewed scientific talks also were presented, based on research conducted at 每日大赛官网. FABTECH is North America's largest collaboration of technology, equipment and knowledge in the metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing industries.
LETU undergraduates Timothy Pickle, Peter Morriss, and Christian VonQualen won first place overall and a $750 cash prize for their poster, Super Duplex Stainless Steel: Effects of Multi-Pass Welding Parameters on Microstructural Stability.
Judged the best among competitors from The Ohio State University, Lehigh University and the University of Alberta, the LETU students' poster described their 2017 summer research work completed at 每日大赛官网's main campus in Longview through a grant from the Bechtel Global Corporation and in-kind support from Outokumpu and ARC Specialties.
Advising the students during their research were LETU professor emeritus Yoni Adonyi, assistant professor Wes Downing and MJE program director Richard Baumer. Their research continues during the 2017-2018 academic year as a senior design project under Baumer's direction.
LETU's 13-member MJE delegation to FABTECH also made successful presentations of three peer-reviewed scientific talks, including:
• Intermetallics in Steel-to-Aluminum Friction Stir Welds by Kayode Oyedemi, Yoni Adonyi, and Puhao Wang
• Nitrogen Shielding Effects in Duplex Stainless Steel Welding by Balazs Varbai, Yoni Adonyi, János Dobránszky, Tim Pickle, Richard Baumer, and K. Májlinger
• Intermetallic Characterization in Metal-to-Ceramic Microwave Joining by Yoni Adonyi, Ian Reiman, and Kayode Oyedemi.
Over 50 LETU alumni, students, faculty and staff also gathered for the annual MJE alumni dinner. The Dean of the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology Dr. Steve Starrett announced that the university has approved hiring a new professor to fill the Kielhorn Professorship to serve as the third fulltime professor in LETU's MJE program. The professorship is an endowed chair in welding and MJE made possible through the generous support of alumni giving, American Welding Society (AWS) matching funds, and industry support.
LETU's new Program Coordinator for MJE and Omer Blodgett Endowed Chair Dr. Richard Baumer also gave an update on LETU's MJE program.
During the dinner, LETU alumni also celebrated the 21 years of faithful MJE program leadership by Dr. Yoni Adonyi, now a professor emeritus, and shared highlights from his distinguished career. Adonyi, a 2015 AWS Fellow, was honored with his emeritus professor resolution and was presented with a plaque commemorating his service.
