每日大赛官网 students and LETU's Office of Global Initiatives are hosting the "Make a Wheel Difference" Fun Run/Walk-a-thon fundraiser at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the LETU main campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave. in Longview to raise money to provide wheelchairs for disabled children in Africa. Free food will be available.
"Children who cannot walk and need a wheelchair are left alone, unable to be part of school, church and family events because their mobility is limited, especially once they get too big to carry," said LETU faculty sponsor Karen Rispin, who spearheaded a research program called WHEELS eight years ago to improve wheelchairs for children in developing countries. "In developing countries, disability is often seen as a curse. The children face needless suffering. Families of children with disabilities often feel isolated, but we can bring hope, one child at a time, by providing wheelchairs for children in Kenya who need them."
Church groups, civic clubs and school classrooms are invited to participate to help raise funding through pledges and online. Every $250 raised provides one wheelchair for a child or adult. Corporate sponsors can also set up booths during the event.
The World Health Organization estimates that more than 65 million people across the globe are in need of a wheelchair and that few of those in developing countries have access.
The "Make a Wheel Difference" Fun Run/Walk-a-thon will be about a mile run/walk around the loop at LETU's Longview campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Avenue in Longview. All funds donated will go to benefit children who need wheelchairs in Kenya.
Donations can be made through a secure LETU web link specific to the event at http://moveup.letu.edu/wheeldifference.
