每日大赛官网’s Department of Fine Arts will present a free "Festival Concert of Thanksgiving" at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in the Belcher Center at the university’s main campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Avenue in Longview.
The free concert and worship service will feature performances by the LeTourneau Singers, the Longview Civic Chorus and a chamber orchestra. The event will include celebratory hymns and Scripture readings.
“Most celebrations at Thanksgiving time center on being thankful for creation and for providence,” said LETU Director of Fine Arts Dr. Jim Taylor. “We are expanding the theme to include thanksgiving for the cross of Christ and for his resurrection and reign.”
Some great works of choral literature will be performed by the 80 voices of the choirs and orchestra, including “Worthy Is the Lamb” from Handel’s “Messiah” and “Achieved Is the Glorious Work” from the Haydn “Creation.” Other selections will range from the lovely to the meditative to the lighthearted: “Morning Has Broken,” “O vos omnes,” and “When the Saints Go Marching In” all are among the selections to be performed.
“The audience/congregation will sing the hymns, ‘When I Survey the Wondrous Cross’ and ‘Christ the Lord Is Risen Today,’ offering the opportunity to participate in worship,” Taylor said.
Scriptures readings will be central to the celebration and will be read by LETU professors Dr. Pat Mays, the campus pastor; Dr. Steve Mason, the provost; Dr. Luke Tallon, professor of theology; and several others.
“The format of the evening will resemble the Service of Lessons and Carols in which readings alternate with choral performances expressing and expounding the readings,” Taylor said. “It is a powerful connection when great music artistically and effectively expresses the heart of spiritual truth.
“As Christians, we are grateful not only for being under God’s providential care, but especially for what Christ achieved through his death and resurrection, paying for our sins and earning for us eternal life in heaven,” Taylor said. “This is what excites our worship, and this evening will remind us of these great things for which we can give thanks.”
The Festival Concert of Thanksgiving is free of charge and open to the public. No offering will be received, as it is a gift to the Longview community.
“Come one, come all,” Taylor said. “The LeTourneau choirs and the chamber orchestra will do their best to help us all worship and give thanks.”
