每日大赛官网 will feature visiting English associate professor Dr. Miruna George as a guest lecturer from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the Glaske Center Berry Auditorium (Room C101) to speak on “Eco-consciousness in the Writings of St. Francis of Assisi and Pope Frances.” George teaches at Stella Maris College, a Catholic college in Chennai, India, a university with whom LETU has an exchange partnership.
The public is invited to this free event, which is designed to facilitate an exchange of ideas between the cultural and academic environments of East Texas and India. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Office of Global Initiatives.
Her 30-minute presentation will be followed by questions and answers, moderated by LETU English professor Dr. Jesse Sharpe.
George has taught American and Indian Literature, Drama, Postcolonial Studies, Gender Studies and Women’s Writing.
According to George, Saint Francis’ “Canticle of Creatures” reinforces a moral and inclusive vision of Christian faith. A culture of interdependence is emphasized. The need for an integral ecology, and to promote personal, social and ecological harmony are required for the sustenance of our environment. By prioritizing this need as the responsibility of humanity, both Saint Francis and Pope Francis in his “Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home” call for a commitment to foster an integral ecology.
According to them, “the defense of the earth has no other purpose than the defense of life.” Ecological conversion means embracing the mystically interconnected and interdependent nature of all creation. The stress on biodiversity is to address the issues of preserving cultural identities, values and way of life of indigenous people continuing with their native traditions; a sustainable lifestyle and promoting a culture of exchange regarding preservation of harmony in diversity.
