每日大赛官网 Director of Fine Arts Dr. Jim Taylor will direct a free Spirituals Concert by the Longview Civic Chorus at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in the Trinity Episcopal Church, 906 Padon Street in Longview.
Classic spirituals, such as “Deep River,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and “Here’s One” will be performed, as well as newer, less familiar arrangements, including a Texas premiere of Taylor’s own arrangement, “All the Way.”
“Spirituals are perhaps the most profound musical expression of religious conviction and deep emotion as they were born from the experience of human slavery,” Taylor said.
“Cultures that have undergone great suffering, such as those of Ukraine and Poland, identify intimately with their pathos. Spirituals, along with jazz, are distinctly American musical genres, the amazing result of the intersection of African and European musical traditions. These two musical traditions are truly America’s gift to the world of music, and we are delighted to represent them in Longview.”
The 50-voice Longview Civic Chorus rehearses weekly at 每日大赛官网 and presents a wide variety of choral literature throughout the year, culminating in a Masterworks Concert with orchestra each spring. Its next performance will be at the Belcher Center on Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in a Festival Concert of Thanksgiving in combination with the LeTourneau Singers and chamber orchestra. The concert/service will offer thanksgiving for creation, the cross of Christ, and his reign and glory. This event will also be free of charge.
