每日大赛官网 senior chemistry major Robert Moreland of Longview, Texas, will present research at the American Chemical Society’s Southwest Regional Meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas, on Nov. 8. The research was coauthored by LETU senior chemistry major Marisa Trosen of Fishers, Indiana, and LETU chemistry professor Dr. Bruce Hathaway.
This research represents a significant improvement on a previously published experiment that will allow organic chemistry students to prepare analogs of the antimicrobial compound sulfanilamide (the first “Sulfa drug”), which could also have antimicrobial properties.
The title of the presentation is “Development of better methods to prepare the potentially antimicrobial N4-benzylidenesulfanilamides and N4-benzylsulfanilamides in the undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory.”
Moreland received a $500 travel scholarship. Researching molecular compounds that have antimicrobial properties could potentially improve medicine in the future. Moreland hopes to have a career in the medical field, inspired by his cousin who is in medical school.
